This 6-piece set offers the complete set of centennial Morgan and Peace Dollars struck by the Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco Mints. The Philadelphia Mint struck the Peace Dollar, and no mint mark appeared. Philadelphia also struck three of the Morgans, one with no mint mark, one with a "CC" privy mark, and one with an "O" privy mark; the San Francisco Mint ("S" mint mark) and the Denver Mint ("D" mint mark) struck the other two Morgans. This was done so that every mint that struck the Morgan Silver Dollar is represented in this centennial release.
The Morgan silver dollar of 1878 to 1904 was the first silver dollar minted since the cessation of silver dollars in 1873 as mandated by the Coinage Act, which forbade owners of silver bullion to produce legal tender coins. Following the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, the United States government assumed the responsibility of purchasing silver bullion and minting it into silver dollars once again. Engraver George T. Morgan was chosen to design this dollar, and his design has left its legacy as one of the most collected coins in United States history.
The Peace dollar was minted from 1921-1928 and 1934-35. It was the last regular production dollar struck in silver. Peace dollars were produced with ninety percent silver and ten percent copper to conform with the coinage act of 1837. In 1962 a silver certificate was partially redeemed for an uncirculated Morgan dollar, which set off a firestorm of interest in saving silver certificates to the U.S. Treasury. Demand was huge, with some in lines pushing wheelbarrows. Several million uncirculated Morgan and Peace dollars were discovered in vaults and sold to the public.
ABOUT THE UNITED STATES MINT
Established in 1792 as the first national mint in the United States, the United States Mint is a bureau of the Department of the Treasury responsible for official legal tender coinage production. The United States Mint has a mission to serve Americans as the sole manufacturer and distributor of circulating currency coins. The U.S. mint also produces commemorative coins for collectors, silver and gold bullion coins for investors (such as the popular Eagle and Buffalo series), as well as Congressional Medals.
