An iconic design in American coin history, this 1 oz Indian Head 999 fine Copper Round from Osborne Mint shows the right side profile of a Native American chieftain created by James Earle Fraser in 1913 for the Indian Head Nickel, also known as the Buffalo Nickel.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS
- Ships individually in protective packaging
- Consisting of 1 AVDP oz 999 Fine Copper
- Obverse: Features a striking effigy of a Native American warrior chieftain in profile, a design featured on the original 1913 Buffalo Nickel, along with the year of issue and inscription "LIBERTY"
- Reverse: Features the wings of an eagle with a shield in front that contains the stars and stripes of the American flag, along with an actual flag from the United States above. The metal's type, purity and weight are also displayed on the top and bottom of the round.
James Earle Fraser made the design in 1912, but it was delayed due to several months of objections from the Hobbs Manufacturing Company. The company wanted to make changes, but Treasury Secretary Franklin MacVeagh made the decision to issue the coin as it was. Unfortunately, the coins were very sensitive, and after years of wear, the dates would eventually fade away. Thankfully, this coin design is still popular among collectors today, especially as it was replaced by the Jefferson nickel.
