The wedge-tailed eagle is Australia's largest bird of prey and is found throughout the country. It is one of the largest eagles in the world with a pretty impressive wingspan and is easily distinguished by its wedge shape tail when in full flight. The reverse side of the coin depicts this iconic bird.

The NGC ( Numismatic Guaranty Company) uses the internationally recognized Sheldon grading scale, which ranges from 1 to 70 to grade coin condition. The MS-70 (which stands for Mint State with a 70 grade) is the highest score a coin may achieve. It’s alternatively referred to as Perfect Uncirculated.

The reverse of this coin was created by John Mercanti, former Chief Engraver and designer of the U.S. Mint. Mercanti created more designs for the U.S. Mint than anyone else in its history. However, he is likely most famous as the designer of the reverse of the American eagle silver coin.

ABOUT THE PERTH MINT

The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as the British Royal Mint’s 3rd branch in Australia. The historical Hay Street location handled gold refining until moving to a modern facility in April 1990. Ownership of the mint was transferred to the Government of Western Australia in July of 1970. Under an agreement with the Commonwealth Treasury, they were empowered to mint and market gold, silver, and platinum as Australian legal tender to investors and collectors worldwide. Today, they are amongst the elite world mints whose pure gold, silver, and platinum items are trusted without question. Items such as the Australian Nugget, Silver Coin Series (Kangaroo, Kookaburra, Koala, and Platypus to name a few), as well as the Australian Lunar Gold and Silver Coin Series are extensively sought after by bullion investors worldwide.
