CASTING A SYMBOLIC SHADOW

An adapted maple leaf mirrors the CN Tower’s shadow, its tip and stem perfectly aligned to symbolize national pride and strength—the emblem of a nation whose spirit rises as high as its tallest landmark!

DID YOU KNOW?

Today, the CN Tower is best known as a world-class tourist attraction that draws nearly 2 million visitors each year, but it was originally conceived as a state-of-the-art telecommunications tower to boost broadcast signals across Toronto. Construction began on February 6, 1973, with its distinctive Y-shaped concrete core rising steadily through a continuous slipform process. Just two years later, in March 1975, a helicopter lifted the antenna into place, bringing the Tower to its full height of 553.33 metres (1,815 feet).

The reverse design by Canadian artist Neil Hamelin commemorates the 50th anniversary (“1976-2026”) of the opening of the CN Tower by featuring an upwards perspective of Canada’s tallest landmark. From this low-angle view, the Tower’s height and elegance are emphasized, its soaring form accentuated by the elongated silhouettes of nearby buildings. Bathing in golden light the maple leaf’s tip and stem echo the shadow cast by the Tower—a powerful reflection of Canadian pride and spirit. The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
